Acerola fruit has one of the highest natural amounts of ascorbic acid or vitamin C. It is also a good source of vitamin A and iron. One fruit will satisfy the daily requirement of vitamin C for an adult. The bright red, juicy, cherry-like fruits are abundant on the bush-like trees two to three times a year. The fruit can be sweet or tart, and makes excellent juice and jelly. Acerola plants are spreading, semi-bushy trees with many branches and small oval leaves. They are very adaptable and grow well at most locations in Hawaii. It was a commercial crop in Puna until vitamin C was synthesized in the laboratory. The pink flowers bloom profusely on the main branches. Acerola thrives with regular care and fertilization. 'Manoa Sweet' is an improved varietal selection from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a sweet delicious flavor and no bitter after-taste. |
