There are many varieties of passion fruit in Hawaii. The most common is the 'Yellow Passion Fruit' or 'Lilikoi.' Other varieties include the delicious 'Purple Passion Fruit' and the 'Giant Granadilla.' The fruit grows on vigorous climbing vines. 'Lilikoi' grows best in the open sun or climbing on a trellis; the other varieties need more shade, especially the 'Giant Granadilla.' The vines thrive here and produce well with regular care and fertilization. The vines fruit predominantly in the summer. The 'Purple Passion Fruit' will grow well with some shading and will grow in the cooler uplands in Hawaii. 'Lilikoi' is most often used as a juice and is rich and acidic. It also makes excellent jellies and dessert toppings. The 'Purple Passion Fruit' is usually eaten fresh when ripe and wrinkled outside. It is also used in drinks because of its sweet, rich flavor and as a garnish. | |||
